Retooling Medievalism for Early Modern Painting in Annibale Carracci’s Pietà with Saints in Parma

Annibale Carracci (1560–1609) drew on the Italian Renaissance tradition of Man Sorrows to advance Christological message within altarpiece context his Pietà with Saints (1585). From its location at high altar Capuchin church St. Mary Magdalene in Parma, work commemorates life Duke Alessandro Farnese (1586–1592), who is interred right front Annibale’s painted image. The narrative development transformed late medieval Lamentation focused dead Christ into a riveting manifestation beautiful and sleeping worshipped by saints angels nocturnal landscape. Thus eschewing historical context, pictorial thrust interpretation attached was heighten Eucharistic meaning while allowing for sixteenth-century theological poetic thought Mary’s body as tomb cast discriminating devotional overtones resting place deceased Duke.
